Public Boulder (Colorado) enthusiastic about United by Music

29-09-2009

At the Moondance international Film Festival in Boulder, held from the 25 until 27 September, the nominated movies were shown for the audience. Although the Curacao movie “United by Music” didn’t manage to catch a prize, the movie about the tour of the Ricciotti ensemble with Izaline Calister got a lot of audience support.

“I am very happy about it. Now is proven that UNITED BY MUSIC is an universal story about how people by playing music and experience music together, become connected to each other. That message is received by everyone. The audience and fellow- filmmakers were impressed how we made this beautiful portrait of Curacao and its people with only one camera and one microphone. Just like on Curacao and in the Netherlands, people came to me to tell about how happy the movie makes them. If you are able to do that, to make people happy, you are a winner. If their would exist a price for the movie which makes you laugh the most, we would have won it.”
(Michel Drenthe; from Boulder where he and Loes Bazen (tour manager Ricciotti ensemble) visited the festival)

The winning movie “Shooting Beauty” of Emmy- nominated filmmaker George Kachadorian, tells the story of fashion photographer Courtney Bent who overcomes her own prejudices about disabled people by let them shooting pictures about their own lifes.

Michel Drenthe with Booka Michel, producer and winner in the category ‘beste movie’.

When the Ricciotti ensemble, a Dutch symphony orchestra of 40 young musicians, announced that they would do a musical tour on Curacao (Netherlands Antilles), the ‘Barbulete Tour’ (Butterfly Tour)’, De Curaçaosche Kunstkring (the Curacao Art Association) decided to raise money to record this unique event.

The Ricciotti ensemble’s musicians together with Curacao jazz singer Izaline Calister, toured around the whole island giving 17 concerts on 17 different locations in 4 days. The documentary shows performances in outside theaters, public squares, social institutions and even in the woods. Everywhere they performed there was a large and enthusiastic public. Black and white, rich and poor, old and young, men and women became one group of happy people, singing and listening, United by Music. The tour became one of the most successful cultural events ever on Curacao.
Their diverse and playful repertoire touched the hearts of everyone on Curacao. The tour became one of the most successful cultural events ever on Curacao, building bridges between Europe and the Caribbean people in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

“UNITED BY MUSIC” – how 40 musicians conquered the hearts of Curacao” is a dazzling and moving impression of Ricciotti’s tour”, held from July 30 until August 3, 2008, featuring Izaline Calister and the Curacao people.

This documentary gives an overview of performances in many beautiful locations on Curacao and the chemistry between the Dutch musicians, Izaline Calister and their Caribbean audience. Music styles include classical, jazz, latin and Curacao evergreens. Enjoy this magnificent and thrilling experience.

Director Michel Drenthe about UNITED BY MUSIC:
One week before the tour would take off, Freek van Beetz from the Curacao Art Society asked me to record all the concerts of the Ricciotti ensemble and Izaline.
Yes, Izaline I knew but the Ricciotti ensemble I had never heard of. I also didn't know what kind of music they would play and how they usually perform. I think because of the fact that I only had time to make the necessary technical preparations gives the film its power. I was as much surprised and overwhelmed by the concerts as the Curacao public. That surprise and the positive energy of the ensemble towards their audience I tried to visualize.

The screening date & time of United by Music is Sat 24 Sept 3.00pm at APPA/UTT, Queen’s Park Savannah South.

Raymi Sambo invited by Dolfijn FM

08-08-2008

Last July, the well-known Curaçao actor and presenter Raymi Sambo was invited to take part in the radio show of Koen van Huigenvoort at Dolfijn FM. In the studio, they talked among other things about the upcoming new television programme RAYMIGREREN.  Raymigreren. Raymigreren is a thrilling series about working in Curacao. In each episode, Raymi does an internship in a different branch of industry of Curacao and is given one week to perform his task. A pilot has been filmed in Curacao last July. In this pilot, we see Raymi during his internship at the CPO (Curacao Pilot Organisation) where he is been given one week to be able to “pilot” an oil tanker into the harbour. We watch him trying to “succeed“, supported by his coach Clifford Neuman (pilot at CPO) and co-host Meliza Garmes. We can clearly imagine that it wouldn’t be without some struggle. Raymigreren is a tv show developed by producer Michel Drenthe from  film-and TV production company Caribbean Filmcom and Wilco Pleging from Wing TV (Dutch film-and TV production company).

Raymigreren is expected to be broadcast on the Dutch television in 2010. The episodes for Curaçao will be specially adapted for the local and regional market.
